As part of the work to rectify the route of the Meuse and its arms and the significant transformations carried out by Hubert-Guillaume Blonden at the end of the 19th century, notably with the creation of the Avroy park, avenue Charles Rogier, des Terrasses and Boulevard Frère-Orban, a port channel was built in 1878 along the straightening of the Meuse. This channel separated from the Meuse by a jetty serving as a landing stage was reserved for boats transporting goods.

Following the floods of the winter of 1925-1926, new work to deepen, widen and dam the river was undertaken, in addition a dam bridge was built in 1930, as part of the Exhibition International Water Commission, at Monsin Island, an area which has hosted, since 1937, the autonomous port of Liège. This bridge-dam makes it possible to replace several locks located in the middle of the city and to stabilize the course of the Meuse. These new developments made the channel obsolete and it was filled in in the 1930s except for part in anticipation of establishing a marina.
