With almost eleven square kilometers, the Sihlsee is the largest reservoir in Switzerland. The construction of the impressive body of water began in 1932 and around 500 people had to be relocated. Numerous flat and raised bogs in the region were drained by the reservoir.

The reservoir is used to generate electricity via the Etzelwerk, which supplies around 270 million kWh of electricity per year.

It is nice to walk around the lake. Around half of the walk has dedicated roadside pedestrian walk path and gravel footpath and the other half you need to share it with the cars, but there is little traffic. It is between 22.4 - 23.0km long and has multiple public toilets, few restaurants and shops during the walk.
