A wooden church already stood here in the 9th century, followed by at least three churches, also built of wood, one of which was destroyed by fire. Around 1200 the wooden church was replaced by a Romanesque brick church, which was almost the same size as the current Gothic Almshouse, which was built around 1400-1427.
Except for worship, the church has been used for centuries for the administration of justice, the "etstoel". The Rolderdingspel (jurisdiction) had an important position in Drenthe. Court hearings took place twice a year from the 13th century until 1688, when Assen took over Rolde's central function. There were only three sessions a year, the third was in Anloo.
