Hiking
Tiendeveen is called that because the farmers here had to hand over a tenth of their harvest to their landlord. That did not make much wiser because in 1830 there were only six houses here. From that time peat extraction got underway, partly thanks to the construction of the Verlengde Hoogeveense Vaart in 1850-1860, including side canals called 'districts'. The broad canal through Tiendeveen is the Linthorst-Homan Canal, dug in 1923-26 by 900 workers.
