The water mill in Ostrittrum was probably built in the 15th century - an exact date is not known. It was a forced mill for the villages of Rittrum, Kirchhatten, Sandhatten and Neerstedt, among others.
The current building probably dates from 1848. In 1870 a sawmill was added to the grain mill, which was powered by a steam engine - a locomotive. The sawmill burned down just two years later. The cause of the fire, it was assumed at the time, was the traction engine. The water wheel was replaced by a turbine in 1910, which was still in operation until it was shut down in 1965. The sawmill burned down a second time in 1992 and the mill was damaged this time too. The sawmill was not rebuilt. After the completion of the restoration in 1998, the mill is now used by the "Möhlenvereen Ostrittrum" for cultural purposes.
