The area of the Achterdiekpark was used for agricultural purposes until 1961. From 1961 to 1966, an animal trading company operated here, and from 1966 to 1973, Bremen Zoo. In 1976, a citizens' initiative association was founded to protect the former zoo grounds with the aim of preserving and developing the area as a park. The idea of nature conservation was to be taken into account and a local recreation area for the citizens of Bremen was to be created.
