It is a Gothic back and stone church, which was built in the beginning of the 14th century. The belfry is next to the church.

Garwitz was a church village as early as 1278 and probably had a parish since 1230. Today's church is a Gothic building made of rocks and bricks, it dates from the 14th century and is a St. Mary's Church. This can be deduced from the inscription on the larger bell and from the inscription on the gallery. The main entrance in the west leads under the organ gallery, there is also a walled up and an unused narrow door in the church. The interior is spanned by a flat, simple wooden ceiling.
A large commemorative plaque for those who fell in Garwitz in the First and Second World War is rare, as it already existed in GDR times. How such a thing was possible has not yet been determined.

The church bells hang in a particularly beautiful, open bell cage next to the church. It was completely restored in 1996 and can now be admired in its new splendor. This was only possible with the great financial support from our partner community from Heidelberg-Ziegelhausen.
The larger bell (Ø 0.94 m) is said to date from 1453, it proclaims with the inscription: O King of Glory, Jesus Christ, come with peace. Maria. In the year of the Lord 1453.
The other bell was cast in 1505 (MCCCCCV). After it had to be delivered in the Second World War, it was found again in a bell cemetery in Hamburg after the end of the war and brought back to Garwitz in 1949. However, because it had cracked, it had to be re-cast in Apolda in 1954. Their inscription reads: The word of the Lord abides forever.

This church has a wonderful newly renovated bell tower that is still manually operated on a weekly basis. Worth seeing and hearing!
