    1.

It is an interesting sculpture by Luk Van Soom, who created the bronze sculpture in 1996.

I liked the sculpture and lingered at the Mönchsturm, as the building in Hammelburg is called. Luk Van Soom comes from the Belgian city of Tumhout. In his work, dreams and reality come together; inspired by myths, magic and stories, he creates his own world, which he integrates into the real, everyday environment. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, the medieval monk's tower is appropriate. The figure was purchased in 1999 by innkeeper Helmut Emmert and loaned to the city of Hammelburg.

2.The artist Luk Van Soom describes and designed the lovers like this: Romeo and Juliet illustrate how the physical and mental are far apart. With Romeo, the bottom is at the top, he is confused, standing on his hands, far away like someone who lives on the other side of the world. In contrast, only Julia's head is visible and symbolizes thinking, detached from the body. With his eyes closed in the dream, always closely entwined with Romeo, no eye contact but mentally inseparable.

The faces of the lovers radiate a kind of bliss, that they are one through spiritual connection and thinking. No one can break this spell, not even death.

This sculpture by Luk van Soom, an artist from Hammelburg's Belgian twin town Turnhout in the north of Flanders, is somewhat hidden in the middle of the historic city wall.
