For nearly a century, in the middle of the woods in Lichtaart, there has been a memorial cross to Nestor Bayot, a soldier from Lens Saint Servais in the province of Liège. On August 20, 1914, the soldier was ambushed there by German Uhlans. When he suddenly came face to face with the enemy he fired a few shots but was then killed himself in the head. He fell off his horse which, along with the fellow soldiers, escaped unharmed. A few days later Bayot was buried at the church of Lichtaart. In 1919 his parents had the remains transferred to his native village. Nestor Bayot was 21 years old when he died. Around 1919, a cross was erected on the site of the firefight that still reminds us of the horror of the war.
