Former St. Catherine's Monastery The St. Katharinental Monastery is a former monastery on the banks of the Rhine near Diessenhofen. The monastery church, an outstanding creation of the southern German baroque, deserves special mention. A rehabilitation clinic is now located in the historic monastery buildings.
The history of the former Dominican convent goes back to the beginning of the 13th century. It experienced various heydays over the centuries and also survived the turmoil of the Reformation after 1529 unscathed. In 1869 the monastery was finally closed and the remaining nuns relocated.
The monastery church, built by Johann Michael Beer from 1732 to 1734, houses an important organ from the time it was built. The main portal of the church is open every day, with the presence of a specialist, access to the interior of the church is possible twice a week in the summer and twice a month in the winter. There is also a small house museum, where the building history of the monastery and its cultural and historical importance as a spiritual center on the Upper Rhine - both in the time of mysticism and the time of the monastery reforms of the 18th century - is presented. The museum is not open to the public.
Guided tours through the church, hermit chapel and the small house museum are offered for groups.
