The Gothic brick church dates back to the 13th century, and is the oldest church in Anklam.

The Marienkirche is the largest and oldest building in Anklam. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1296. The first church building was probably erected in the middle of the 13th century. From around 1300, the Marienkirche was expanded into a three-aisled hall church and extended to the west.
