Located on a hill of 445 m. s.l.m north-west of Urbino, between the hamlets of Gadana and Schieti, the fortified village of Castel Cavallino in the past enjoyed a position of control over the whole Valle del Foglia. In the early Middle Ages, due to its strategic position, it became the domain of the aristocratic family of the Bernardini, then around 1213 it passed to the Lordship of the Montefeltro.
After numerous bloody disputes between the Montefeltro of Urbino and the Malatesta of Rimini, it passed under the dominion of the Malatesta. At the end of 1300 it passed under the rule of the Della Rovere, then to the Papal State, then to the Kingdom of Italy.
