The first news relating to a church on this site dates back to the 13th century, as it was dependent on the parish church of San Donato. The current one was built in the fifteenth century, at the point where an alleged miracle occurred, the Virgin appeared to a mute shepherdess and gave her the word again. It was rebuilt in 1711 by the priest Lorenzo Sebastiani; it underwent further changes internally in 1766, when it passed to the Philippine Fathers. Later he acquired the parish of Santo Spirito, whose parish priest also made changes, such as the reduction of the church to create the rectory. It is currently a single-nave church with a single altar. The parish is dedicated, in addition to the Virgin of the Assumption, also to Sant'Antonio da Padova and Santa Marina.
