The 14th Winter Olympics took place in Sarajevo from February 8 to 19, 1984. Juan Antonio Samaranch, head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the time, called the Games the "best organized in history". It was the first Olympic Games in the Balkans. And the first winter games in a socialist country.

Hiking

The Trebević cable car is a gondola lift that leads from downtown Sarajevo to the slopes of the local mountain Trebević. The cable car, which opened in 1959, was destroyed during the Bosnian War 1992-95, rebuilt in 2017 and reopened in 2018. The cable car played a special role during the 1984 Winter Olympics, as it facilitated access from the city to the competition venues on Trebević. The route reopened on April 6, 2018, the day of the city of Sarajevo and the 26th anniversary of the beginning of the Siege of Sarajevo.
