The Mariastein monastery in the Leimental landscape is the second most important place of pilgrimage in Switzerland, alongside the Einsiedeln monastery.
The Mercy Chapel Maria im Stein, which lies 59 steps below the monastery church in a cave, was built in the 15th century and has since attracted pilgrims who worship Mother Mary here - hence the name of the village. According to legend, the chapel is said to have been built on the spot where a child miraculously survived a rock fall. The child was - and this is not a legend - apparently the son of the powerful aristocratic Reich family based in the nearby Landskron Castle. The monastery was added later
