The Metzerlen Observatory is the observation station of the former Astronomical Institute of the University of Basel, which was closed at the end of 2007.
In order to ensure the continued existence and use of the Metzerlen observatory as an astronomical observatory, the non-profit foundation Regio-Sternwarte Metzerlen was founded in 2011. The seat is in Metzerlen-Mariastein. It is financed by donations from private individuals and various institutions.
