Story
(Alt-)Jochenstein was mentioned for the first time in 1222, but due to lack of space it was probably abandoned around 1300 in favor of Neujochenstein Castle, which was only a few hundred meters away. In a document from 1299, their owner Eberwein von Jochenstein granted Bishop Wernhard von Passau extensive access rights to both castles. In 1310 he finally sold it. The bishop continued to employ carers until the 16th century, after which Neujochenstein was also abandoned and quickly fell into disrepair.
