Ponte Friuli and Porta Friuli, surmounted by the Toresin, the main access road to the fortified city, still give good evidence of the ancient Castle of Portobuffolè from the 10th century, which suffered from decadence after the Middle Ages and subsequent demolitions.
The ancient course of the Livenza, diverted in 1913 to avoid flooding, created the moat on which the drawbridge rested in medieval times, next to the small port that hosted the trade of salt, silk and spices.

You wouldn’t expect to find this little gem nestled in the Treviso countryside, where Veneto now turns to Friuli. Alto Livenza is instead a still livable territory, industrious but careful not to lose its roots. Portobuffolè is an example of this: a Venetian-style village that preserves the grace of a feudal lord who loved art and poetry, and the fickleness of its river, the Livenza.
