In 1585, under the leadership of Sir Walter Raleigh, the first British colony on American soil was founded here. However, it was not a lasting one. After the colony was abandoned after one year, the fate of the slightly more than 100 colonists of the second founding in 1587 remains uncertain. In 1590, the colony was rediscovered abandoned – the term "Lost Colony," also commonly used today, reflects this. A memorial stone commemorates, among other things, the birth of the colony's first child, Virginia Dare, on August 18, 1587. Her whereabouts are also unknown. The site is now accessible through the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
