A suspension bridge existed at this site from the mid 19th century onwards until damaged by a fallen tree in 2009. Initially a normal footbridge was going to be the replacement but the local Amberey Society managed to pull a few strings and engage a Gurkha sapper unit to construct a replacement for the costs of materials only. A plaque on the far pillar records their exploits.

The original bridge had been damaged when an old oak tree fell on to it. The 70 Gurkha Field Support Squadron of 36 Regiment stepped in after consultation with West Sussex County Council and the Amberely Society.
