Saint Anne is not only the namesake of the church, but also of the small community. According to various apocryphal gospels, she was the mother of Mary. In the square in front of the church there are two information boards of the so-called "Histour Dithmarschen", which explain both the church and the cannon placed there in detail.

The community of St. Annen was created in 1491 by diking the Eider island of Bösbüttel. This was the achievement of three men from the Russebolingmann family, who were native to this area in the north of Dithmarschen. That's why the three crucian carp from this family's coat of arms were included in the municipality's coat of arms.

The three Russebolingers Heymen Claus, Russians Marquart and Junge Claus Johann donated a chapel for the new location, which was dedicated to St. Anna, the mother of Mary. The name of the chapel was transferred to the place.

In the coat of arms, the Mother of God therefore "speakingly" represents the place name and is at the same time a symbol of the history of the place's origins. St. Annen later left the parish of Lunden and formed its own parish. The blue shield base represents the Eider and is a reminder of the district's former status as Eider Islands. The number of fishes in the coat of arms also refers to the three settlement centers of Neufeld, Damm and Österfeld and to the three Eider rivers that run through St. Annen and separate the parts of the community from each other.
