View of the Landwasser Viaduct

The Landwasser Viaduct and its neighboring viaduct are architectural highlights in the Swiss Alps. They are considered masterpieces of engineering and make for fantastic photo opportunities. The southern vantage point is a nearby starting point when approaching from Filisur.

The Landwasser Viaduct is probably the most spectacular structure on the Albula Railway and the landmark of the Rhaetian Railway. The challenge for this quarter circle was the narrowness of the gorge. A 100m radius had to suffice due to this topography and also for cost reasons. Due to the resulting forces, the 6 stone arches had to be constructed unusually close to one another. Several specifications for the route were thrown out the window here: no 50 km/h (only 45), no 25% gradient (only 20) and no minimum radius of 120 m (only 100).
