Santa Claus, also known as Leprechaun Buttplug [1], is a statue of Paul McCarthy. It is located on the Eendrachtsplein in Rotterdam. The statue was made in 2001 by the American artist on behalf of the International Sculpture Collection [2] for a place in the city.

The image represents Santa Claus holding an abstract elongated object in his right hand. According to the artist, the object can be a tree, a butt plug or something else. The Rotterdam city council bought Santa Claus for an amount of 280,000 euros with the intention of placing the statue near the De Doelen building. This led to a lot of resistance, for many people the image had a sexual connotation, which quickly gave it its nickname. On September 22, 2005, the statue was placed as a compromise in the courtyard of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where it was unveiled four days later by Mayor Opstelten. Because the museum was going to renovate the courtyard, the statue was placed on the sidewalk of the museum on 21 August 2008.

At the beginning of 2008, the municipality of Rotterdam had the plan to move the statue to the Van Oldenbarneveltplaats at the head of the "Koopgoot". This plan has generated quite a lot of resistance from a number of entrepreneurs around this square.

Ultimately, in June 2008, it was decided to place the statue on Eendrachtsplein (as part of the Westersingel Sculpture Route), after an intensive lobby of the Binnenweg shopkeepers' association. The statue was transported in a colorful procession to Eendrachtsplein on 28 November 2008 and placed there.

This bronze sculpture was created by American artist Paul McCarthy in 2003. Santa Claus is holding a huge dildo instead of a Christmas tree. The people's anger boiled up and pushed the sculpture from one place to another. Only in 2008 did she find a new home in the Eendrachtsplein.

The statue appears to have undergone a few moves and caused quite a stir. Art can always be argued and has room for interpretation. Santa Claus, popularly known as the butt plug gnome, is a statue by Paul McCarthy from 2001 on the Eendrachtsplein in Rotterdam.
