The Macedonian poet, storyteller, essayist and publicist Kočo Racin, born in Veles in 1908, spent most of his short life in illegality and in prisons. In view of such a résumé, Kočo Racin's literary output is all the more astonishing. His main work, the collection of poetry Beli mugri (White Twilight), deserves special attention. This is the first ever collection of poems in Macedonian. The narrow volume, illegally printed in Samobor, Croatia, and published in Zagreb in November 1939 contains only twelve poems, two of which ("Elegien für dich" and "Oh, I would have a shop in Struga") each have a cycle of six and seven respectively Poems. In these socially committed poems, Racin complains about the untenable conditions in Macedonia between the two world wars, about the bitter need of the farmers, the misery of the factory workers, the exploitation of the tobacco growers and the miserable existence of the day laborers, who often spent months as migrant workers from their families were separated.

Racin's social commitment and the influence of folk poetry on his main lyrical work Beli mugri was summed up by the Munich slavist Alois Schmaus (1901-1970):

"At that time, the young autodidact Racin in particular proved to be a talented lyric poet who, in the rhythm and tone of his verses, knew how to make the folk poetry tradition subservient to the expression of personal experience and the discussion of social problems in his homeland."

The cultural, historical and political significance of Kočo Racin's collection of poems, White Twilight, should not be underestimated for the Macedonian people.
