The Steinfurths Diek is an artificially dammed lake in the Hamburg district of Billstedt.
It is fed by the Glinder Au and flows over a weir towards Steinbeker Mühlenteich.
The name goes back to a historic stone ford at this point.
The shoal in the course of the Glinder Au led to an elevation (Diek) running parallel to the stream.
In the 16th century, the Glinder Au was dammed here in order to build a mill.
The surrounding Waldpark Steinfurth has developed into a biologically valuable green area in the east of Hamburg and is home to kingfishers and gray herons.
Rare butterfly and dragonfly species such as the map, the aurora butterfly or the banded demoiselle also have their habitat.
At the weir there is a fish ladder made up of a series of concrete pools that are 3 meters wide, 1 meter long and 1 meter deep and have a fall depth of approximately 23 cm.
In 2005, NABU complained that the construction was not suitable for eels and burbot, among other things.
Even salmonids with a lot of jumps could hardly climb these stairs because the approach path is too short.
Eels, carp, tench, crucian carp and pond clams can be found in the lake, which is classified as a cyprinid body.
Fishing is only permitted to members of the registered association "Fishing Friends of 1963".
In 2004 an application was made to designate the Steinfurther Dieks as a natural monument.
