The hanging kitchens are the city's most famous landmark, which was designated a protected cityscape in 1972. Appingedam still unmistakably looks like a town. In the center you can admire many originally medieval buildings. The most famous sights are the three hanging kitchens and the narrow bridges above the Damsterdiep.
