The hanging kitchens are the city's most famous landmark, which was designated a protected cityscape in 1972. Appingedam still unmistakably looks like a town. In the center you can admire many originally medieval buildings. The most famous sights are the three hanging kitchens and the narrow bridges above the Damsterdiep. The hanging kitchens are best viewed from the bridge on the Kniestraat. Source: visitgroningen.nl/nl/locaties/196787074/hangende-keuken
Because the buildings were once made as a warehouse, there was little room for a kitchen in the house. To create space for a kitchen at the house, the kitchens were built hanging above the Damsterdiep. When the kitchens were built exactly is still unknown.
