The almost one kilometer long section is "two-lane" - one lane for cyclists and one for pedestrians. The lakeshore is covered with reeds and lined with many benches, small works of art and curiosities.

The lake is of Ice Age origin. At the end of the Ice Age there was a glacier tongue here. Today the lake has a surface of approx. 118 hectares. About 14,000 years ago, the lake, which at that time still belonged to the Baltic Sea, was up to 15 meters deep. About 5000 years ago, the lake was cut off from the Baltic Sea by the Narrow Heide spit that was being created. The only connection to the Baltic Sea was then the Ahlbeck drainage ditch. Due to natural silting processes, it is now a shallow lake. Today it is only 1 to 2 meters deep in the center. In addition, the lake lost a lot of its area. Originally it is said to have reached as far as Nistelitz in the south. The name of the lake comes from the southwestern settlement Schmacht, which is no longer on the lake shore today.

Small sitting areas right on the lakeshore with a view of the sunset are a must-see.
