The citadel above the old town is an attraction for many locals and tourists. The Drususstein dates back to Roman times on the citadel grounds. Since 1055 there was a Benedictine monastery, which was dedicated to St. James. The expansion of the Jakobsbergs fortress began around 1620 under Elector Johann Schweickhard von Kronberg, the construction of the citadel finally took good three decades later Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn in attack.
Today, the citadel houses various municipal offices and is also the venue for numerous cultural events, such as the here since 1975 OpenOhr Festival.

It is worthwhile not only to look at the entrance portal from the outside but also to push the bike into the courtyard. Various information boards explain the architecture with regard to its original use as a fortress. In addition, the detour is rewarded with a wide view over the city center of Mainz to the Rhine, Wiesbaden and the Taunus.
