Millom was a prosperous mining town at the height of the iron-ore industry. At one point its iron mines were the most productive in the world. The sight of great plumes of orange flame spewing from the blast furnaces would have been common up until the industry collapsed in 1968.

Today Millom benefits from the beautiful surroundings of the Duddon Estuary and the glorious views into the Lake District. There is a museum dedicated to its industrial past in the town centre, as well as various eateries and hostelries.
