Backhaus St. Peter-Ording

Here, on certain days, there are fresh bread and cakes from an (almost) traditional bakery - and anyone who would like to compare his own recipe with his product from the local oven is allowed to bake his dough here.

Social meeting place of earlier times
Since 2005, St. Peter-Ording has had a new historical attraction: after looking at a Prussian map from 1873, one of the handwritten buildings was interpreted as an old bakery and rebuilt here based on this model.
A bakehouse was a simple building that was usually located in the center of a town and was used by the villagers as a communal oven. On the one hand, the risk of fire in private houses could be reduced, but at the same time bakeries also served social interaction and promoted the village community. People met here not only to bake, but also to find out the latest news from the village. Until the 1960s, this form of baking was widespread in Germany, especially in rural regions; you could also find such a building in almost every parish on the Eiderstedt peninsula. Since wood was in short supply in the 19th century, cow or sheep dung was often used for heating.
The bakery, which was rebuilt in 2005, is located opposite the town hall and was mainly financed through donations. Baking took place here for the first time in December 2006, which was a great success and continues to enrich the town center of St. Peter-Ording to this day.
Depending on the season, the “Bread Baking in the Backhaus” event takes place once or twice a month, where homemade dough can be dropped off until 12 p.m. and bread and cakes are sold until 2 p.m.
