Here you can see the remains of a fortification built by the Celtic Treveri tribe a few hundred years before Christ. An information panel provides further details.

A Celtic tribe, the Treveri, settled on the fertile soils of the Moselle region in the centuries before Christ. To protect themselves from enemies, they built a refuge or refuge castle on the defensively advantageous ridge of Veldenz. For this purpose, a sectional rampart was built to shield this ridge from its only open side. The natural rocky ridges of the ridge were integrated into this defensive line (the so-called "Heidenmauer"). These ramparts (Caesar called them murus gallicus = the Gallic Walls) are typical of the Celts. A dense framework of tree trunks (up to 5 meters high and 3.5 meters thick) was filled with stones and boulders. The walls were built without any mortar, and the outer walls were covered with stone so that the ends of the cross-laid logs remained visible. Inside, the timberwork was connected by longitudinal beams and therefore could not be torn apart. Within these walls, residential buildings, a representative building for the respective Celtic prince, storage rooms, gardens, and paths were built. Source: Text information panel

      "Small but large"

The Treveri settlement area stretched between the Rhine and Meuse rivers. They mostly lived in isolated farmsteads and small settlements, while upper-class farm communities were located in hilltop settlements. Even more impressive than the Heidenmauer (Heathen Wall) is the Celtic ring wall near Otzenhausen on the border with Saarland. A Celtic town likely existed there. Source: Text information panel

The "Heidenmauer" (Heathen Wall), a stone wall approximately 90 meters long, is evidence of a Celtic refuge.

        Heidenmauer; Veldenz, Municipality of Veldenz
        Description
        Area:
        a) Currently visible moat area: - m²
        b) Area of the rampart body: 1400 m²
        c) Internal area usable for development purposes: 61600 m²
        Total: 630.0 acres
        Survey: July 1977 (Koch)
"... Research history: The cited literature contains only brief references to stone ramparts crossing the ridge. Initially, Cüppers suspected that the ramparts belonged to a prehistoric fortification.
Gilles recorded small late Roman finds from the southern tip of the mountain spur, including the medieval castle, and observed that Roman bricks had been used in the lowest part of the keep.
During an inspection and subsequent survey, we identified and recorded only one rampart fortification at a height of 426.0 meters.
Finds: Roman Small finds near the castle.
Date: After the spur may have already been incorporated into a prehistoric fortification, it was revisited around the middle of the 4th century. The castle, first mentioned in 1107 and the residence of the Counts of Veldenz for centuries, was destroyed by French troops in 1680.
