Today's Luisensee is an opencast mine left over from the former "Franz" pit.
The "Franz" mine, put into operation in 1851 and shut down in 1928, was one of the former lignite mines of the Muskau Arch. The remaining hole filled with water, a plant cover developed on the former mining area, and trees grew. The Luisensee was created, it is about one kilometer west of Klein Kölzig.
