Pizzighettone, one of the best preserved walled cities, thanks also to the passion of the Volontari delle Mura Group. Medieval village on the Adda but also bordered by the Dead Serio. Worth visiting are the "casemates" and the old prison

According to tradition, it was even the Etruscans who founded it in the 6th century BC. C ..

After a long period of decay, in the 12th century a castle was built. Then, towards the end of the 14th century, the Viscontis had the mighty walls built, which was renovated and enlarged several times between the 15th and 19th centuries. It still remains today and is, among other things, one of the main attractions of this place.

The walls, about 2 kilometers long, hide inside a succession of 93 casemates, large halls with a barrel vault that served as accommodation for the military, for firing positions or as warehouses.

The casemates here in Pizzighettone form a system of intercommunicating environments for a total of about 800 meters of covered path.

Within the walls there are other monuments that can be visited:

The 12th century tower, which is what remains of the castle. In this tower, in 1525 even Francis I of Valois king of France was imprisoned

The ancient collegiate church of San Bassiano, also from the twelfth century, which preserves fourteenth-century high-reliefs, frescoes and a rib inside. According to tradition, it belonged to the ferocious dragon Tarantasio

Life imprisonment, a maximum discipline prison closed in 1954, with the gloomy segregation cells inside.
