The Zuid-Willemsvaart is a channel in the provinces of Dutch Limburg, Belgian Limburg and Noord-Brabant. It serves as the lateral channel of the Maas. Various other important waterways connect to it, including the other Kempian canals and the Wilhelminakanaal. On its almost 122 km route, the Zuid-Willemsvaart passes through cities such as Maastricht, Maasmechelen, Bree, Weert, Helmond and 's-Hertogenbosch.

Lock 7 has been replaced because the old lock was more than 180 years old. The new lock has been constructed for the next hundred years. The flood defense is an important function of the new lock. The difference in height between the canal in Helmond and Aarle-Rixtel is about? 128; n 1.60 meters. That is why there is a lock between them to compensate for the difference in height. The new lock also offers the possibility to let boats through.

Hiking

The current lock 7 in the Zuid Willemsvaart was opened for shipping on 22 June 2013. However, much shipping has not yet passed the lock. Only at the festive opening and the Pancake Boat is there on and protected. The Aarle Rixtel lift bridge may only be opened to a very limited extent by the municipality due to traffic jams across the bridge.
