Few people know that there are many tunnels and cavities under Zweibrücken, which were dug into the rock in the 15th and 16th centuries by the French fortress builder Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban as a fortress line to protect France's new acquisitions.
In the beginning these caves also served the indigenous population of Zweibrücken as dwellings and camps. In the 18th century they were used as cold storage and beer cellars by the then 100 breweries that were located in Zweibrücken.
