Forest workers who worked there at the time reported that a beech tree got caught in another tree when it fell. When they were freed, their branches brushed along the tree behind which forester Peschke had sought protection. Branches of the falling beech would have caught the rifle that the forester was carrying over his shoulder and tore it and his dog under the trunk of the falling tree. The seriously injured man could still be freed, but died on the way to the Marburg clinic.
