According to tradition, it was built in the early Middle Ages by Queen Teodolinda, queen of the Lombards (between the 6th and 7th centuries).
Barnabò Visconti was locked up there until his death by his nephew Gian Galeazzo, who had ousted him.
The castle underwent a serious period of decline in the nineteenth century, when it was even transformed into a quarry for already squared building materials.
It is currently used as a backdrop for open-air cultural and artistic events.
