Pingo ruins are the remains of a pingo when the ice melts in the underground. This creates an annular crater that is filled with melt water. This lake can then be filled up again in a warmer time with organic material as a result of plant growth. Over time, peat forms from this organic material. Later that peat was removed by humans to use as fuel. This made the shape of the pingos visible again as round lakes in the landscape.
