Hamilton Dock complemented the Commissioners' two existing dry docks on the Co Antrim side of the Victoria Canal, opened in 1796 and 1826. Water was kept out of the dock by a hollow caisson. It consists of an iron framework clad with wrought iron panels and clad in wood.
