Named after Captain John Shaw who built a wooden bridge at the site in 1655. The bridge was rebuilt from stone in 1698, but was swept away during flooding. What remains today was rebuilt in 1709.

The Bridge provides another major access point for the towpath, offering parking facilities and canoe access to the river.

A lovely walk alonside the river Lagan, walk into the centre of Belfast or walk to Lisburn.
This walk has a hard surface so is suitable for wheelchair users (though beware it is also used by cyclists).
You can start in Lisburn and follow the path into Belfast and on out to Jordanstown 21m approx.
for refreshments there is the Gatekeepers lodge at Shaw's Bridge or there is a lovely French van at Minnowburn (more for coffee and drinks with a few eats) both are lovely.
All off road with just the sounds of the river and birds to listen to.

The old stone bridge stretches majestically over the still water, which is perfectly reflected and creates a calm, almost magical atmosphere. The surrounding nature is inviting and offers a wonderful backdrop with green meadows and shady paths. A light wind blows through the trees and the sounds of nature accompany you with every pedal stroke.
