At the beginning of the 19th century, Kaarst became part of world history. Napoleon planned the North Canal. He wanted to connect the Meuse with the Rhine. Construction work began in 1808. The canal was supposed to be 30 meters wide and navigable for large barges. The major project was stopped again in 1810 for political reasons. The canal remained unfinished. But sections were used for freight and passenger transport.

When the first railway lines were built in the middle of the 19th century, the watercourse was no longer competitive. Today the North Canal is a popular local recreation area. The route of the Regiobahn also runs here from Kaarster See to Mettmann.
