The NSG Pferdesbroich is located on the northwestern border of the district area south of the town of Schiefbahn and is part of the Korschenbroich urban area. It is an almost closed forest area with an area of 35 hectares. Only in the south are there smaller agricultural areas and a disused landfill. In the north, the North Canal borders the area.

The Pferdesbroich was originally a riparian forest site, and today it represents the largest remaining fen in the North Canal lowlands. Depending on the moisture conditions, the potential natural vegetation is alder swamp forest, bird cherry-alder-ash forest or moist pedunculate oak-hornbeam forest. The low groundwater levels that were found in 1993 have now risen again, so that the original plant communities can stabilize or regenerate again. There is currently a potential threat in the establishment of stands of the Hercules perennial.
