In the past, the Samers brought the salt from Reichenhall along the salt road to Rosenheim, where it was then loaded onto ships on the Inn. The carters stayed there overnight and only moved on the next day.
A poor man lived in Rosenheim with his family. He took advantage of the fact that the carters went to sleep. He came almost every night to get a sack full of salt. He sold it during the day. That brought in a lot of money, because salt used to be very valuable. He did that for a few months.
One night, when he was coming home tired, he heard a voice saying: "If you steal another grain of salt, you will turn to stone!" At first the man was frightened, but the next day he no longer took it seriously. He thought it was all a bad dream. So he went out to steal again the next night.
But when he lifted the first sack from the wagon, the warning came true and the thief and his sack turned to stone. (Source: Einmayr Max)

This stone figure is supposed to remind of Rosenheim's past as a salt metropolis by holding a whole sack of salt in its hands.
