According to the Schwerin city archives, a fire department in Boizenburg/Elbe was mentioned as early as 1829, 190 years ago.
The Boizenburg Volunteer Fire Department was founded by 30 citizens on July 21, 1912 in “Hesses Gasthof”. In over 100 years, an eventful historical development has been experienced in Germany and here in Boizenburg.
It can be recorded that this volunteer fire department with its comrades, from the German Empire, the First World War from 1914 to 1918, through the Weimar Republic, subsequently with the takeover of power by the National Socialist dictatorship from 1933, the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 and the destruction of the German Wehrmacht with the unconditional surrender of Germany and the division into a western and eastern occupation zone by the victorious powers, as a result of which the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) were founded, and in 1989 with the peaceful revolution in the GDR led to the reunification of Germany, lived through a historically eventful period and during this time fulfilled the tasks set to protect the citizens and their belongings of the city.
While firefighting was the actual task in the times mentioned above, the range of operations of our fire department here in Boizenburg has now fundamentally changed.
The comrades are not only required to fight fires, but also provide carrying assistance for the emergency services, open doors, are responsible for technical assistance on vehicles when rescuing people, water rescue on the Elbe, are active in flood protection, and make their contribution in the context of disaster control and much more, to name just a few tasks.
