On May 7, 1945, Colonel General Alfred Jodl, authorized by Karl Dönitz, signed a document of the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht in the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Reims. This came into force on May 8th at 11:01 pm CET. Since this military surrender had only been signed by Jodl and not by the commanders-in-chief of the individual branches of the German armed forces, it was agreed that a second document of this surrender would be countersigned by representatives of the High Command of the Wehrmacht (OKW) and by the commanders-in-chief of the army, air force and navy allow.
Thereupon, shortly after midnight on May 9, 1945, General Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel signed for the High Command of the Wehrmacht and the Army, General Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg for the Navy and Colonel General Hans-Jürgen Stumpff for the Air Force in the officers' mess in the large dining room of the Army Spy School Wehrmacht in Berlin-Karlshorst the ratifying document of surrender.

For this reason, the "Capitulation Museum" was established in 1967 at this historic location. Initially closed after reunification, it has been back in 1995 with a new concept as the "German-Russian Museum".

The museum was set up in the former officers' mess of the fortress pioneer school of the Wehrmacht, which opened in 1936. From May 1945, the house initially served as the official residence of the head of the Soviet military administration in Germany (SMAD). From 1949 to 1953 the building was used as the seat of the Soviet Control Commission, which was created after the founding of the GDR. From 1953 to 1954 the Soviet High Commissioner resided in the building of what is now the German-Russian Museum. With the termination of the occupation statute over the GDR on March 25, 1954, it lost its field of activity.

This is where the final surrender after World War II was sealed. In the museum you can look into the room where the signing took place.
