As a landmark, a 6-meter-high cross made of oak and stainless steel pipes was erected on slag heap 296 in Alberoda. The wood is covered with metal, synonymous with silver mining in the Ore Mountains. The cross, erected in December 2016, is intended to draw attention to the post-mining landscape of the Ore Mountains region, both from a distance and from the motorway access road, while simultaneously creating a sense of identity.
Furthermore, an information panel was installed not far from slag heap 296 on the "St. James's Way Silberberg" pilgrimage route – Aue-Alberoda section – to highlight the cross and the region's traditionally significant mining history.
