At the end of the 18th century, a 28m long tunnel was driven into the slope in order to improve the water supply in Mannheim with one spring (from many). The project ultimately failed and the source was part of Heidelberg's water supply until 2007.
The gallery is closed and the entrance is fenced. From time to time there are guided tours with an inspection of the gallery.

    Geological highlight.
Originally (18th / 19th century) to improve hygiene in Mannheim, a spring was taken here and planned as a long-distance water supply, but it could never be put into operation for this purpose.
Until 2007 it was still part of the Heidelberg water supply.

Occasionally, guided tours are offered here, during which the almost 30m long tunnel can be entered.

Mannheim's water supply was planned by the rector of Heidelberg University - Professor Johann Andreas Edler von Traitteur - and commissioned by Elector Karl Theodor in 1790. The spring is one of many from which the water supply should be fed. In the Rohbacher Heimatmuseum you can still find water pipes from this time.
The construction was interrupted by the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars (1800-1814) and finally canceled.
The water hygiene conditions in Mannheim improved with the straightening of the Rhine from 1817.
The Heidelberg History Association shows two pictures from the tunnel at s197410804.online.de/ABC/ABCbrunnen.htm
