The town of Dommitzsch near Torgau is also called Gänsebrunnenstadt. The goose fountain, which was built in 1983 and thus marked the start of the annual goose fountain festival, is located in the middle of the market square. The foundation stones for the town of Dommitzsch were laid towards the end of the last millennium on the glacial heights of the banks on the left side of the Elbe. The place "Dumoz" or "Dumoki" was first mentioned in a document in the 10th century. The town charter of Dommitzsch was first mentioned in 1298. The favorable location at an Elbe crossing and an old connecting road from Torgau to Wittenberg was particularly important for the development of the town, so that trade and business could develop freely. Towering over the city's silhouette, the mighty brick building of the Marienkirche rises up in the city center.Source: karte.wanderwalter.de/np-dh/313223_Dommitzsch-Ortsmitte.html

The fountain was built in 1983 and is a reminder of the long tradition of keeping goose in Dommitzsch in the previous century.
