Great Lindenallee to the White Cross

    Translated by Google •

      November 13, 2017

The "White Cross" with a height of almost 3.30 meters stands on a generous open space in the forest and was built in 1799. In the pedestal of the cross is the 12th Station (Jesus dies on the cross) depicted. The 13th stop is on the right side of the road, which leads past the cross, where after about 25 meters the 14th stop is located.
"I am the way the truth and the life": This quote (John 14,6) adorns the crossbeam of the cross. The White Cross marks the western end of the wide Trinity axis, which extends across the estate.
The cross was donated by Werner Adolph von Haxthausen (1744-1823) and his second wife Maria Anna von Haxthausen, b. from Wendt to Papenhausen (1755-1829). The couple had 14 children and is therefore also referred to as parents of the so-called "Great Generation". From the first marriage Werner Adolphs with Luise of Westphalen to Heidelbeck (1754-1772) comes from a daughter, Therese Luise (1772-1853). She is the mother of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff and her relationship with Bökendorf results from this.
Drawings by the Lippish pastor and artist Emil Zeiss from 1854 show that in earlier times the "White Cross" could overlook the castle in the gentle valley directly on the opposite cross at the open-air stage, where at that time no forest and no Stage was.
The White Cross is the destination and end point of the Way of the Cross procession on Good Friday. After the Way of the Cross has been passed to the fourteenth station, the congregation gathers in front of the White Cross and there is a short address of a clergyman.
