FREE and well informed by the enthusiastic counter volunteer on duty, we playfully discover the semi-circular barracks, which date from the Napoleonic era 1810 - 1815. In the interactive experience center we are introduced to the entire history of the 16th-century stronghold: the Eighty Years' War 1568 - 1648, Fort Liefkenshoek in the Napoleonic era, Quarantine Center Red Star Line, …

Historical explanation: This stronghold is one of the oldest fortresses in Flanders. The military structure was built in 1579 by order of Prince William of Orange to protect the city and port of Antwerp against the advancing Spanish troops led by Alexander Farnese.
In July 1584 the State fort fell into the hands of the Spanish army, but in April 1585 the people of Antwerp regained it. After the fall of Antwerp on August 15, 1585, Fort Liefkenshoek, together with Fort Lillo, remained in the hands of the insurgents of the States Armies. The new Republic thus controlled the Scheldt until 1786. Fort Liefkenshoek, together with Fort Lillo – on the other side of the Scheldt – was of great importance for control over shipping. Together they were able to close off the Scheldt. Over the years, the fort changed occupiers (Austrians, French, Germans,…) and function several times.
From the middle of the 19th century until 1952 it served as the Red Star Line quarantine station.
Then as a naval base, as a holiday resort for the professional soldiers, ... and now as a historical experience center. The oldest buildings date from the Napoleonic period (1810-1815).
